On a trip to Long Branch Lake in Macon, Missouri, I decided to stop by the local RV dealer: Shoemaker RV Center in Bevier, MO. It was late October, 2000, and they only had 3 pop-ups on their used lot. Jim (my salesman) showed me the 97 Camplite 1916 SL they had, and it was love at first sight. Two weeks and $5000 later, it was mine. A week after that, the Shasta was sold for $900. (Yes, I only paid $800 for it, but after the new tires and all the repairs/additions I had made, I broke even.)

What a jump from the Shasta! Slide-outs in pop-ups are the best inventions since air! (Incidentally, Camplite was the first to patent slide-outs in pop-ups.) No more crawling over tables and eachother to get to bed, and enough floor space to herd cattle! (Well, kids...at least!)
Unfortunately, upgrading to a larger camper also meant upgrading my tow vehicle. My '94 Ranger 4-Cylinder struggled to pull the Camplite, so I decided to get something a little larger.
Meet my new best friend - a a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS Short Bed, Extended Cab with:
4 doors
Heavy-Duty Suspension
5.3L V8 Vortec Engine
HD Trailering equipment
Transmission Oil Cooler
-and a half-ton of other stuff
(That's me in the bed...)
I chose 2WD instead of 4 to lower the GVWR and allow me to pull heavier loads. | |
